WAINAO N°10 - THE MOMENT
WHY NOW? BECAUSE HARDWORK IS THE REASON WHY MARTA SUCCEEDED. THERE IS THAT FALSE NARRATIVE THAT CHAMPIONS HAVE GOD GIVEN TALENT, AND THEY RELY ON IT IN THE BIGGEST MOMENTS. FALSE ! SHE'S EXTREMELY TALENTED BUT SHE JUST DID WHAT SHE PRACTICED ALL HER LIFE.
Champions don't think faster than others, they don't think. They dont't think about the moment, They just do what they practiced their entire lives. Marta shocked the world that day but she just did what she used to do. It was her, the defender and the ball. The ball came and she just reacted.
People always wonder how she can try something like that with such a pressure..why not? That's just a move like the others and she mastered all her moves.
“ SHE DIDN’T THINK ! she trained all her life to not think. When the moment comes, you got one second. You hesitate-you fail. You Think...when you didn’t work hard enough !"
“In football, HOW great you are will never NEVER be more important ….than WHEN you are great….”
27th September 2007: MARTA, considered the best football player by the time, scored the fourth and last goal to allow Brazil take on USA in the semi-final of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Marta Vieira da Silva, is a Brazilian athlete who is widely considered the greatest female football (soccer) player of all time. Marta was discovered by an other Brazilian female coach, Helena Pacheco, when she was only 14 years old. Marta is a prolific goalscorer with great technical abilities and she can play multiple offensive positions. After playing for the CSA youth team, Marta started her professional career at Vasco da Gama in 2000. After two years, she was transferred to Santa Cruz, a small club in Minas Gerais, where she would play for two more seasons, before defending Umeå IK of Sweden.
In the league, Marta scored 22 league goals and Her second season (2005) 21 goals and with Umeå winning the league, having gone undefeated. In 2006, Umeå once again won the league without losing, and Marta, as in the previous year, was the league's top scorer with 21 goals. The 2007 season was a relatively successful for Umeå with the club winning both the league and the Swedish Cup. She went in to the 2007 tournament as the Fifa women’s world player of the year, so expectations were high. She met them. Marta participated in the 2007 FIFA Women's World Cup in china, with Brazil who strolled through the group stage, winning all three games with Marta scoring four goals. In the quarter final Brazil won 3–2 against Australia with Marta netting from the penalty spot.
on 27 September 2007, in front of a thunderous crowd of almost 50,000 fans and on a steamy hot night, In the semi-final Marta scored twice as Brazil won 4–0 against the United States—the second goal scored in spectacular fashion.
Every time the ball arrived at marta’s feet, the crowd was on the edge of their seats, anxious to see what magic she would conjure up next.
The USA gifted Brazil its first goal in the 20th minute, coming off a corner kick that was spun to the near post. With no Brazilian players close to getting a touch on it, it skidded off the turf as midfielder Leslie Osborne dove to clear it, but instead inadvertently headed the ball into her own net from close range. The second Brazil goal came seven minutes later on a great dribble from Marta. After that goal with a With the 2-0 lead and up a player, Brazil possessed the ball and created counter attacks. Brazil scored the third goal in the 56th minute.
Then, at the end of the game, Marta, put on a dazzling display of dribbling and scored the capper in the 80th minute. She took a chipped pass from Renata Costa in the left side of the penalty box with her back to the goal, flicked the bouncing ball around substitute Tina Ellertson to the inside, ran around her to the outside, then cut inside to evade Whitehill before hitting her shot into the lower left corner. Once again Scurry got a glove to it, but couldn’t turn it away. The two goals gave Marta a tournament-leading seven in the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
It’s in fact, Marta’s favourite world cup moment; she said :“My favourite Women’s World Cup memory is from 2007, when we beat the United States in the semi-final. I think that match was not only my best moment as a footballer, but also the Brazilian team’s best moment at a World Cup. On that night, I scored what I consider to be the best goal of my career [Editor's note - the fourth goal]. So it really is a perfect memory.”
It was the first loss in regulation time for the U.S. women in the past 51 games and the heaviest defeat ever suffered by the American national team. The four-goal deficit also marked the biggest margin of defeat in U.S. history.
